Nutrition Health Review Editorial Message—Winter 2017, No. 114 "A habit cannot be tossed out the window; it must be coaxed down the stairs a step at a time." —Mark Twain W elcome to 2017 and to NHR's first edition of the new year! We are very excited about 2017 and the upcoming issues of NHR we have planned for you on all sorts of healthy lifestyle topics. We had a lot of fun with this Winter edition—Number 114—and we hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did putting it together. So let's get to it! New Year's resolutions....Were you one of the 41% who, on January 1, declared to themselves with fixed purpose that this would be the year they'd quit smoking or start exercising or eat healthier? Or maybe it was to start saving money or spend less of it? Or something more abstract...maybe be happier or less pessimistic? Well, it's almost 2 months into the new year, and now is a good time for you to assess your progress. Are you on track and feeling good about what you've accomplished so far? If so, that's great! Keep up the good work. Or...are you in an unmotivated, apathetic rut because your commitment to change flew out the window early in January? If you answered yes to this, you're not alone—most of us give up on our New Year's resolutions early in the year. But why? And what can we do to change this and get back on track? In this issue of NHR, we explore the science and practice of behavior modification—or how we get rid of bad habits and pick up good ones. We've sorted and summarized the latest research on behavior modification and compiled tips and techniques from the experts on how to stick with the plan and successfully achieve those healthy lifestyle goals, such as maintaining a healthier diet and consistent exercise program, getting better sleep, quitting smoking, and more. We know not everyone makes New Year's resolutions, but most of us will, at some point, attempt to change some behavior we don't like about ourselves. We hope this edition of NHR helps keep you inspired, motivated, and on track to achieving long-term success in living a healthier, happier life. Sincerely, Elizabeth A. Kllumpp Executive Editor * We welcome reader feedback! Email comments, questions, or suggestions to info@vegetusfoundation.org.
